Flood Assessment Report

Location: Hiran region

AFDAN, in collaboration with various humanitarian agencies and UN OCHA, conducted a comprehensive flood assessment in Beletweyne District on May 20th. The Hiiraan Regional Administration office led the visit, which included representatives from multiple organizations. Our primary goal was to evaluate the emergency response needs of the displaced population due to recent river floods.

We visited the evacuated sites of Eljaale A, Eljaale B, Farax Caafi, and Xuduley, where we recorded a total of 7,100 displaced households. The affected populations mainly include children, women, the elderly, and people with disabilities. The increasing number of displaced persons is a direct result of intensified river floods causing significant damage to farms, public infrastructure, and livelihoods.

Key Findings

  1. Urgent Needs: There is a critical need for clean and safe drinking water. Current water sources are inadequate, and immediate installation of water purification systems or distribution of water treatment supplies is essential.

  2. Shelter: Many households are living in precarious conditions with insufficient shelter. Emergency shelter assistance, including tents and tarpaulins, is urgently needed.

  3. Food Insecurity: A significant number of households face food insecurity. Emergency food assistance programs must be implemented to address hunger and malnutrition.

  4. Healthcare: Existing healthcare services are insufficient. Immediate deployment of mobile health teams and establishment of temporary clinics are required.

  5. Additional Needs: Sanitation facilities, hygiene promotion, livelihood support programs, education for children, and psychosocial support are critically needed.

We urge humanitarian partners to join us in mobilizing resources to provide emergency food assistance, water and sanitation initiatives, healthcare, and livelihood support. Coordinated efforts and collaboration are crucial to effectively support the displaced and create lasting positive change in our community.

Transforming lives, fostering resilience, and building a self-reliant Somalia. Join us on this journey towards sustainable development.
