In Somalia, many communities, including internally displaced persons (IDPs), face housing challenges, often resorting to makeshift shelters constructed from cardboard, rugs, and tree branches. Additionally, urbanization and deforestation exacerbate the situation, leaving families unable to repair or rebuild their traditional Arish homes. These Arish dwellings, typically made from sticks and cemented with cow dung, are vital for shelter, but their maintenance becomes increasingly difficult amidst environmental changes.
AFDAN recognizes the critical need for sustainable housing solutions in Somalia’s vulnerable communities. Our Shelter Programs aim to address these challenges by providing assistance to local communities in rehabilitating and maintaining their homes. Through innovative approaches and community engagement, we empower individuals with the skills and resources needed to adapt to changing climates and preserve their housing stability.
Our programs not only focus on physical rehabilitation but also on capacity-building initiatives. We train community members to maintain and repair their shelters independently, ensuring long-term sustainability and resilience. By partnering with local stakeholders and leveraging community expertise, AFDAN is committed to fostering self-reliance and confidence among vulnerable populations in Somalia.
